CPD Requirements Changed in 2024. How Does it Work Now?

Since 2024, every doctor in Australia needs to be enrolled with a recognised “CPD home” to meet registration requirements. The idea is that instead of you trying to juggle certificates and spreadsheets, one accredited provider helps you plan, track and show your CPD in a consistent way.
In practice, this means you need to:
Join an AMC accredited CPD home that fits your practice
Complete at least 50 hours (not points) of CPD each calendar year
Spread those hours across specified activity types and link them to a written professional development plan.
The change has meant that your CPD is not tied to a single default pathway. It is a service you can choose to suit your own needs and preferences.
What is a CPD home?
A CPD home is an accredited organisation that runs a complete CPD program and holds your records in one place. In the platform you plan your year, log what you do and download proof when you need it.
A CPD home will:
Map clearly to the 50‑hour requirement and activity types.
Help you write a professional development plan that matches your work.
Give you simple tools to log activities, upload certificates and generate summaries for renewal or audit.
What’s the Framework?
The goal of the revised CPD framework is to push CPD towards activities that impact your practice, not just simply turning up at enough events.
The framework groups CPD into three types of activity:
Reviewing performance – anything that gives you feedback on how you work (e.g. peer review, supervision, multi‑source feedback)
Measuring outcomes – activities that look at the results of your care (e.g. audits, quality improvement projects, outcome data)
Educational activities – the traditional style of CPD (e.g. conferences, webinars, online modules, reading).
You still need 50 hours a year, but you now need a meaningful portion in the first two categories, not just education.
NASOG Membership Incorporating CPD Home
With the open CPD landscape, you can choose from a wider range of accredited CPD homes including those offered or supported by professional societies and associations.
This year NASOG has joined the move by societies to connect members to new CPD homes.
In addition to standard NASOG membership options and benefits, we are offering 1 year, 3 year and Lifetime membership options inclusive of AMA CPD Home.
About AMA CPD Home
AMA CPD Home is an accredited CPD home open to doctors across Australia. Founded by AMAWA and the Australian Society of Anaesthetists, it was the first non-college CPD home to be accredited by the AMC.
It has been built for users who want a clear, compliant structure without unnecessary complexity.
For a busy clinician, the key advantages are:
A program that clearly matches the 50‑hour, three‑category model, so you don’t have to decode the rules yourself
An online platform where you can set a plan, log activities quickly, upload evidence and record brief reflections as you go
Dashboards and completion indicators that show you, at a glance, whether you are on track for the year.
The platform is designed around clarity and ease of use, so you can see what you’ve done and what gaps remain.
Changing Your CPD home During the Year
You are not locked into one CPD home forever, under the framework, you can move to another accredited provider. If you have already logged hours with one CPD home, you can still switch mid‑year. You do not “lose” those hours, as long as you follow the steps below to transfer your activity statement.
If you decide to switch, the steps are:
Enroll with your new CPD home.
Download/export your activity statement and certificates from your current provider.
Keep copies of any reflection notes or evidence that might be needed later.
Enter or upload the CPD you have already completed that year (if you choose AMA CPD Home through NASOG you can email the activity statement to them and they will upload it for you).
Start logging your activity in the new platform so your full year’s CPD is visible in one place.
You might want to keep a personal backup of everything for peace of mind.
For your registration, two CPD elements are essential: that you are enrolled with an accredited CPD home and that you can show you have completed the required hours and mix of activities.
There is no requirement that all 12 months must be spent with the same provider.
Ultimately, your choice of CPD home is up to you.
