Government policy, not consumer behaviour, is driving rising Medicare costs

A report released last week by the Parliamentary Budget Office shows that government policy has driven a significant proportion of the growth in MBS costs. In fact, of the A$325 real increase in MBS spending per head since 1993-94, all but A$74 has been the result of explicit government decisions.

Higher cesarean delivery rates may be OK

An analysis of data from World Health Organisation (WHO) member states suggests that national cesarean delivery rates of approximately 19 per 100 live births are associated with lower maternal or neonatal mortality. This number stands in contrast to the current WHO recommendation that population-level cesarean delivery rates not exceed 10% to 15%.
